2026 Innovative Education Showcase · School of Business

Innovative Education Showcase.

Mon 28 Sep – Fri 2 Oct 2026 · Library Exhibition Space · 10am – 5pm daily

Five teaching tools built in the Department of Econometrics & Business Statistics, Monash University Malaysia, a Learning and Teaching Grant (L&T) education project. Walk in, no booking required. Free for all students and staff. Try any tool hands-on in five minutes, or take part in the thirty-minute virtual reality study.

Taking part

Take part in the study

The virtual reality study takes about thirty minutes and is the only activity that is measured. Each of the other tools can be tried hands-on in about five minutes.

01
A short pre-test

Taken before any material is shown, to give a baseline for comparison.

02
A summarised lecture

The same material every participant receives, condensed to the essentials.

03
Virtual reality or the browser

Algebra and geometry in a headset or on screen. Participants choose which.

04
A post-test to close

The participant with the highest VR score of the week wins a mechanical keyboard.

01
Five minutes of hands-on use

Staff set up the tool you choose. You then use it yourself, changing the inputs and running it on its own data as in a class.

02
A few quick questions

Two or three short questions on how you would use the tool and what would stop you.

03
Keycap bundles

Handed out daily to participants while stocks last.

The grand prize

The participant with the highest VR score of the week wins an MKB GMK80 tri-mode keyboard with Kang White switches and Wukong keycaps. The prizes are sponsored by MKB; see how to enter below.

Daily

Each day, keycap bundles go to the five highest VR scores and the five highest browser scores. That makes 50 bundles over the week, open to both groups.

No booking needed

The showcase is open from 10am to 5pm, Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October, and is staffed throughout. Walk in and ask for the VR study or a five-minute session.

The collection

Five innovative teaching and learning tools

Each was written for a unit taught in this department and is used in one. They are on the wall in the order a student meets them, from a first course through to research.

Vector Studio: y, its projection and the residual at right angles, drawn in 3D
Linear algebra · Undergraduate · Browser
Vector Studio

Vector Studio draws the geometry of least squares in 3D, and the scene can be rotated by hand. When y is moved, its projection and residual update with it. It has fourteen concepts with a scene for each, a guided tutorial, a quiz and a Sandbox for building vectors, planes and operations from scratch.

Econometrics Explorers

166 interactive explorers for the teaching of Econometrics and Business Statistics, Business Analytics and Actuarial Analytics. Each is an interactive page on which every figure recomputes when an input is changed.

Econometrics · Undergraduate to postgraduate · Browser
Econometrico

Econometrico runs econometric analyses through menus and dialogs. Every analysis is written out as both an R script and a Python script as the student works.

OSEM: a structural model drawn on the canvas
Structural equation modelling · Research · Desktop and browser
OSEM

OSEM is a free application for PLS-SEM and CB-SEM. The model is drawn on a canvas and estimated in R on the user's own machine. It has no licence fee and no cap on records, and it runs offline.

Chatbot Generator

The Chatbot Generator turns a unit guide or a set of frequently asked questions into an assistant that answers student enquiries only from that material. Each assistant runs in the coordinator's own Google account.

166
Interactive explorers

The explorers cover eight fields.

83
Procedures in Econometrico

They cover seven course areas, from ordinary least squares to panel data and volatility models.

14
Concepts in Vector Studio

A Sandbox is included for building the construction from scratch.

48
Bundled datasets

The datasets range from the Longley data to staggered panels.

Data uploaded

The three browser tools run their computations on the user's own machine.

Perceived usefulness

On a five-point scale.

Perceived ease of use

Rated positively, but below usefulness.

A projection is difficult to show in two-dimensional teaching materials. The module piloted here presents the geometry of regression in three dimensions: the column space of X, the projection of y onto it, and the residual at a right angle.

Students rated the module as useful but less easy to use, and the lower ease-of-use rating is attributed to the headset and its installation. The module has since been rebuilt as Vector Studio, a browser application needing no headset, no installation and no sign-in; the VR and AR builds remain available.

The pilot measured the module with the Technology Acceptance Model and the NASA Task Load Index. The study at the showcase compares the two routes with a test before and after.
